Headless Shopify Storefronts Built for Speed

Keep Shopify for what it's excellent at (catalog, checkout, payments, apps, admin) and replace the theme with a storefront you fully control, on the Storefront API with Hydrogen or Next.js. Faster pages, any design, and a mobile app on the same data.

When Headless Shopify Is the Right Call

Headless Shopify is right when you want Shopify's managed commerce (checkout, payments, fraud, the app ecosystem, a marketing-friendly admin) but the theme system is limiting the storefront: speed, design, personalisation, content integration or a mobile app. The backend stays Shopify. The storefront becomes your application.

Against the other options in this cluster: choose WooCommerce headless when your content lives in WordPress and you need full checkout control. Choose Odoo when stock, pricing and B2B rules are the real complexity. Choose custom when commerce is the product. Choose Shopify when managed commerce and the app ecosystem are the point.

Technical expertise

Shopify's Headless Ecosystem, and Its Limits

What we build with, and what headless Shopify can't change, stated plainly.

Storefront API (GraphQL)
Products, collections, cart and customer data for the storefront: the contract everything else is built on.
Hydrogen + Oxygen
Shopify's React/Remix framework and hosting for storefronts that want to stay inside the Shopify platform.
Next.js storefronts
When the storefront shares a design system or codebase with the rest of your web estate, or needs a CMS alongside.
Shopify checkout
Stays Shopify: headless doesn't replace it. Checkout Extensibility and Shopify Functions customise it within Shopify's limits, which is a feature, not a bug: payments, fraud and compliance stay solved.
Customer Account API
Login, orders and profile on the headless storefront without leaving the design.
Metafields and metaobjects
Structured content on products and pages so merchandising stays in Shopify admin.
Apps in a headless setup
Backend apps (inventory, fulfilment, reviews with APIs) keep working. Theme-injected apps (visual builders, some widgets) don't. We inventory yours before recommending headless.
Headless CMS (PayloadCMS)
Campaign pages, editorial and landing content next to the catalog.
Search and performance
Meilisearch or Shopify search, edge caching, image pipelines, Core Web Vitals budgets.

How we build it

From Theme to Headless Storefront

  1. Audit

Theme, apps, checkout customisations, metafields, markets and SEO: what carries over, what needs an API-based replacement.

  2. Storefront architecture

Hydrogen or Next.js, CMS, search, caching, the Storefront API queries per screen.

  3. Build

Storefront on live catalog data from the first sprint, checkout hand-off, customer accounts.

  4. Content and SEO migration

URLs mapped, redirects set, structured data and sitemaps generated, metafields populated.

  5. Launch

Market by market or all at once. Theme kept as fallback until the numbers confirm.

  6. Grow

Mobile app on the same API, personalisation, performance work.

Headless Storefront Engineering We Have Shipped

Our production headless stores run on an Odoo backend. The storefront layer (Next.js, GraphQL, search, payments, performance) is the same discipline we apply to the Shopify Storefront API.

Ask a question

Can we keep Shopify checkout in a headless build?

Yes: and you must. Headless Shopify replaces the storefront, not checkout. The cart hands off to Shopify's checkout, which you customise within Shopify's Checkout Extensibility limits. Payments, fraud and compliance stay Shopify's problem, which is most of the value of staying on the platform.

What does a headless Shopify migration cost compared to a theme rebuild?

More: a theme rebuild customises within Shopify. Headless builds and hosts a separate application on the Storefront API. It pays back when speed, design freedom, content integration or a mobile app are worth more than the extra build and upkeep, usually for brands where the storefront is the product.

Do we lose any Shopify apps going headless?

Some. Backend apps (inventory, fulfilment, subscriptions with APIs, reviews with APIs) keep working. Apps that inject into the theme (visual builders, pop-ups, some upsell widgets) don't. Their function is rebuilt in the storefront or replaced. We inventory your apps in the audit.

Hydrogen or Next.js?

Hydrogen when the storefront lives entirely in the Shopify world and Oxygen hosting suits you. Next.js when it shares a codebase or design system with the rest of your web estate or needs a headless CMS alongside. We build both.

Will SEO survive the move?

Yes with a plan: URL mapping and redirects, server-rendered pages, structured data and sitemaps are part of the build, and the old theme stays live until the new storefront is verified.

Can a headless Shopify storefront and a mobile app share one backend?

Yes. The Storefront API that serves the web storefront serves a React Native or Flutter app.
