The short answer

What Is the Difference Between Odoo Community and Enterprise?

Odoo Community is the free, open-source edition (LGPL v3) with the core business applications. Odoo Enterprise is the paid edition built on the same core, adding proprietary applications (Studio, Documents, Sign, Planning, advanced Accounting and more), the official upgrade service, Odoo S.A. support and Odoo.sh hosting, under a per-user subscription. Both can be customized and integrated without limit.

The practical difference isn't "features" in the abstract. It's whether your business depends on specific Enterprise applications, how you want the system hosted and upgraded, and who you want behind it when something breaks. Most businesses can name those factors in ten minutes. The table and tree below are built to make that conversation short.

Decision tree

Which Edition? Three Questions

Answer in order. Most businesses stop at the first or second.

  1. Question 01

Do you depend on an Enterprise-only application (advanced Accounting, Subscriptions, Helpdesk, Sign, Documents, Planning, Studio) that would be expensive to replace?

    Yes
Enterprise. The subscription is cheaper than rebuilding those apps.
    No
    Continue to the next question
  2. Question 02

Is your operation highly custom: industry workflows that need custom modules regardless of edition?

    Yes
Community + custom modules. You would build the same modules on either edition. Community saves the subscription.
    No

  3. Question 03

Do you want managed hosting (Odoo.sh), the official upgrade service and a vendor support contract more than you want control?

    Yes
    Enterprise.
    No

Total cost of ownership

Community Is Not Free and Enterprise Is Not Just a Licence

Compare the whole cost, not the subscription line.

Odoo Community

No licence fee. Everything else is still a real cost.

Odoo Enterprise

A licence line, in exchange for features and vendor services.

Add these up for your user count and horizon (the Odoo pricing page walks through each layer, and the hosting page compares Odoo.sh, Online, cloud and on-premise). For a 10-user business with heavy customization, Community usually wins on cost. For a 100-user business using Subscriptions, advanced Accounting and Odoo.sh, Enterprise usually does.

First-party experience

What Choosing Editions With Clients Has Taught Us

  1. 01

The decision is made by three or four named features, never by the whole comparison table.

  2. 02

Businesses that need custom modules anyway lose less by choosing Community than they expect: the modules were coming either way.

  3. 03

Odoo.sh is the most under-weighted Enterprise benefit for teams without infrastructure people, and the most over-weighted for teams that need Redis, a search engine or a real-time server alongside Odoo.

  4. 04

Studio is a reason to choose Enterprise only if business users will own small changes. If developers make every change, it adds little.

  5. 05

Support expectations decide more edition choices than features do. With Community, be honest that the partner is the support.

Ask a question

What do I actually pay for on each edition?

Community is free software (LGPL v3). Enterprise adds a per-user subscription. Implementation, customization, hosting, upgrades and support cost the same kind of money on either edition, so the licence is one line of the budget, not the budget.

Odoo pricing, layer by layer

Is one edition more customizable than the other?

No. Both run the same framework, so custom modules, OCA modules, APIs and headless frontends work on either. Enterprise adds Odoo Studio for no-code changes. Community relies on modules for the same result.

Odoo Community

Can I switch editions later, in either direction?

Yes. Community to Enterprise is the easy direction: the database is compatible, you add the Enterprise modules and subscription, re-test custom code and optionally move to Odoo.sh. Enterprise to Community means replacing Enterprise-only features with Community, OCA or custom equivalents before the licence is dropped, so we assess feasibility first.

Odoo migration services

Which edition is better for a small business?

Usually Community, unless a specific Enterprise app, most often advanced Accounting, is essential. Small teams keep the subscription money for implementation.

Which edition is better for a growing company?

Often Enterprise once several Enterprise apps are in daily use and Odoo.sh removes infrastructure work, but growing companies with deep custom workflows stay on Community happily. Decide by the app list, not the headcount.

Does Community support custom modules?

Yes. Hi-Tech Alloys runs a foundry ERP with thirty custom modules on Odoo 16 Community.

Do third-party apps from the Odoo store work on both editions?

Yes. OCA modules and app-store modules built for Community. Enterprise-only apps aren't available.

Can Heliconia help me choose between Community and Enterprise?

Yes, and independently: we implement both and contribute to OCA, so the recommendation follows your workflows, hosting, budget and roadmap.
